chicken

Don't expect much posting from me lately. I am starting up the beginner rental season and this week alone I am working Mon Tues Thurs Fri and Sat besides my regular schedule. Yes, it is that busy until the end of September, I didn't slow down until December last year. I am however twittering away it is easy to send a text and keep you up to date rather than sit and take time to blog typing out this long post. You can always email me to talk to my mother has found the internet and it has been easy to catch up on things that way. Need acne creams ? I don't need these any more, I never used them to begin with.

So yeah, chicken. Paul and I were clearing away brush for a lane in the pasture. We then took the tractor to push the brush out of the way, well we couldn't see, and the right front tire went over the edge and took the rest of the tractor with it. The tractor didn't fall entirely over the edge, the rear right tire was holding it up out of the heaping pile of brush it would be landing in soon. So after lunch we took the big tractor over and began to pull it out. Paul wanted me to get on the little tractor (it is small, weighing in at 4 ton) I said, uh no thanks, ( there's the chicken part, he didn't call me a chicken, he didn't want to get in there either) I don't want to go over with it. So sure enough, when he tried to pull it out the first time it went right over, not completely on it side though. After that I was able to ride it out and we then successfully got it out of the pile o' brush. It may not sound like it but I was pretty scared. oh while we were getting that out, the cows got out of the new pasture we were working on to get patched up so we then had to get them back in and start fixing fence, the thing we were there to do in the first place....It is always an exciting day working on the farm.

Cleveland Rocks.

Depending on your definition of rocks. I took a look at the AL Central standings and puked. I couldn't believe The Tribe is in last place. AND they are going to trade CC Sabathia
before the trade deadline at the end of the month. I don't pay attention enough to remember if this situation is similar to the Bartolo Colon trade. I know that CC is in much better condition that Bartolo was in before he was traded. I also remember GM Mark Shapiro being a genius after getting all the prospects for Colon. I can't remember who I think Grady sizemore was in there and two or three more. If Shapiro can do that again, that will be great. I hate seeing Cleveland in last place again.

It reminds me when I was a kid the Indians of the 80's were bad. really bad. but somehow I didn't remember that. I always thought the indians were the greatest. No matter who they were playing and I never remember them losing, even though looking back that what they did. I do remember the old Muninioal stadium. The bathrooms and the long inclines up the levels, the huge marboro sign by the scoreboard and the Old Wahoo swinging the bat at one of the corners entrances. Memories like that make me a baseball fan still today, even when they are last place and trading their star pitcher.

calls at work

Today, while at work, I get a call. the caller was older, but she was talking on the phone for somebody else. Did you ever get that? Your talking to somebody, who is actually talking to the person you're talking to on the phone, and it would be easier to just talk to the person that is telling the person on the phone what to say?(clear huh?)

It goes something like this:

me: Kerr's Music World, may I help you?

caller: Um, yes, I wondering if you could answer a question for me.

me: Sure, I'll do my best.

call: Do you know the title of a song, I can only remember part of the lyrics. "on a train to Georgia."(then repeating what the other person in the room is saying)

me: hmmm, nothing comes to mind, I will check on the computer. ( just googled lyric she gave me) is it a country song?

call: YES!

me: is it "blah blah blah?"( some guy I don't know, don't care.)

call: oh yes! that's it, that's it! I can't believe you have it! How much is it? I'll be right down to pick it up.

me: Sorry, we don't carry that in stock, we deal with band and orchestra instruments...blah blah blah...explanation. I would have to order it did you. Did you want the sheet music? We don't carry CD's.(repeating myself about band instruments.)

call: What?!? Then how did you find that answer?!

me: I'm just good on the computer.

call: oh.(silence) thanks for answering it then. bye.

Too Much Information?

So This will qualify as too much information, but you're reading this, so I assume you don't care too know. Steph and I decided that a vasectomy is the way to go. Four is enough, I guess. I called up my insurance co. and my deductible is $1000. Then once I meet my deductible, they only pay 80% of my bill. This year alone I have paid over $2000 just in premiums. So I have already paid over $2000 in premiums( in 6 months) then have to pay out another $1000 to reach my deductable, then I will still pay 20% after that as well. Here comes the good part. I called one Dr.( one of the four that I can go to according to my insurance) and the cost is $1200 PLUS hospital costs. I thought I was going to get a vasectomy, not a prostate exam... come on. I thought they could do this prcedure in the office? (I know they can, I have seen it done, another story, don't ask) So I am going to call the other three and see how they charge and go from there. I think it is going to be cheaper to do what we are doing now, and not get the vasectomy...

Jake's Friend the movie star

Jake has this friend who moved out to LA to be an actor, and he has gotten pretty good at it. He has been in some roles here and there (studio 60, Driftwood) and there and in a lot of commercials. Nate is now in the movie Get Smart that comes out June 20th. He is also just finished filming the spin off called GS:Get Bruce and Lloyd. He stars in it with the Japanese guy from Heroes. if you remember that show, which I liked but I didn't like the fact that is was drug out every week. I just wanted it to be a movie and watch the entire thing at once. I should just wait that buy the entire season with out commercials I guess.

I found some photos and some commercials that Nate was in and I think there is an unofficial Nate fan web site. I think this is his agent as well, (he is on the front page listed with their accomplishments.)

The guy is probably thinking he has got a following now.. or that there is some seriously troubled people in this world that have too much time on their hands.

Here is a link I can't embed.

Here he is in a trailer. and by the looks of the trailer, I might have to drag Stephanie to see it in the theater...yes, dear.

He's in this one as well. ok, I am finished. I really am not obsessive, just able to find out a lot of thing on the internet...

On a completely different and unrelated note, tonight I am going to eat at the Olive Garden and after I eat all those bread sticks, I will have to take the best diet pill on the market. I look forward to it. the dinner, not the pill.

My opinion on the government, maybe

The front page of today's Herald Dispatch reads:

W.Va. government considering 4-day work week

I will try to discuss this in a matter that doesn't reveal my opinion until later on. If you know me, then you already know my opinion. Here is a clip from the article.

Some lawmakers state that reducing the state government employees will reduce gasoline consumption. It may lead to greater job satisfaction, less turnover and less stress.

Gov. Joe Manchin's spokeswoman, Lara Ramsburg, said Friday that the governor is open to looking at creating a four-day work week for state employees, but government services are required all-week long. "Our dilemma is we have services we must provide," she said.

Diane Holley, spokeswoman for the state Department of Administration, said state agency directors have had the option of adopting a shortened work week for years.

The Joint Committee on Government Organization could launch such a study later this year.
You can read the entire article here.

My first reaction was "You have go to be kidding me." I did try to think it though. Again for those of you who know me, It is hard for me to think through things on the spot. It takes some time. I did think through it a bit before typing and bring you these fine points:
  • When has the government been fast with anything? Generally, they don't move quickly with much. How is cutting their work week going to get them to move any faster?
  • Although I am not totally against government, I really think they stay out of our way for the most part. Not getting things done in a timely manner gets in the way.
  • If government workers work another 2 hours for the first four days of the week(that's four ten hour days), is it going to lead to less stress in the work place, and more job satisfaction, and less turnover?
The solution that I think would be the best answer, is to cut government services back, so that the state can run more efficiently. I don't know if efficient is in the government's dictionary or not but it hasn't demonstrated it to me yet.

Cutting the government would:
  • decrease taxes
  • decrease spending
  • prioritize spending (roads and signs, not the "Robbert C. Byrd highway" signs every ten miles on State Route 60, either.)
  • Make the people rely more on them selves them letting the government step in that try "to help them out" of what ever situation they are in.
Overall I think, West Virginians in particular, want their cake and eat it too. They say they are all for states rights and independence, and gun this and gun that, BUT they want the government programs as well. Again, not all West Virginians are like this, but enough to notice.
I looked up some stats form the census bureau there are some pretty interesting stats there. I am not pretending to be a stat guy, but it is interesting none the less. Again, I am not running for office, I DON'T have all the answers, but I do have an opinion just like everyone else. I thank you for reading mine.

Homesteading thoughts

Here is a response to Phelan's post which I started to comment on and decided it was too long of a comment so I am writing it here. Make sure you read here posts first because this might not make much sense.

If we were rich, we wouldn't homestead. I think there is some thing to be said about being poor. (what ever your definition of poor is. If you are going by the gov't's poverty line then most of the U.S. is in poverty and therefore most of the U.S. need to be dependent on the gov't , but that is a different post and maybe I listen to too much talk radio...) If you had more money to spend, you would spend it on other things. i.e. convenience. That is what society (advertising) teaches us now. Make money to buy an easy life. That is the world we live in today whether we agree with it or not. If you had never had the opportunity to suffer and get between a rock and a hard place, you would be where you're at right now. You had the choice to get up off your butt and do something about it, or choose to have a pity party that lasts forever and rely on other people's pity to get what you want. (I know people like this, their story is the same no matter what part of the country you live in) I don't think we would appreciate the way we live and raise our children and all that stuff now, if we hadn't gone through the rough times we did then. Are some homesteaders rich? Maybe. Are they our age?(30's) Probably not.

We are taught that if you don't have a lot of stuff and money to get more stuff, then you're a failure. Most kids these days aren't taught the values of working hard, and living within your your means not charging everything that moves. OK I am done ranting. I think we get the point, working hard, and not spending more than we make, are good choices for everyone in the long haul we call life. For us, homesteading is a part of that life.

Valentine's Day

Here's a bit of advice from uncle Tim when it comes to giving valentine's day gifts: go small. Don't build up her expectations right off the bat. You can go big on Christmas, and her birthday, but the hallmark card holidays, come on, do you really need another excuse to buy her something else? It's the thought that counts on this one, really. So don't go out and set the bar too high. Don't go out an visit any mortgage lenders just to please her. Do what I did, write here a nice Thursday thirteen.

Fridays are boring.

On Fridays I am in the office and I sit for the most part. This is where I do most of my computer work. Ok, you can call it what ever you want I have somethings ou can see. Here is a video from the discovery channel I found fascinating, and scary. I don't watch much TV and this might be why. I found the medical tech exciting, but the invasion of privacy scary. The part at the end where the Dr. will not happen Dr.s don't care now, why would the care 50 years from now. ( I know a general statement, but I can picture myself in 2057 ( I'll be almost 82 years old by then) sitting in my house with a shot gun from the turn of the 20th century waiting for some one to come and test me to see what I am going to do. We'll see. I can picture Nolan yelling at me to calm down...

An addition to my Spinach pie

Yesterday, my wife made spinach pie for dinner, and baklava for desert. All homemade, by scratch, except for the phyllo dough. It was amazing! I really liked it, the baklava was perfect. So I brought it to work today for my lunch, I even took the baklava. (She had a piece for breakfast.) I shared the baklava with my fellow non dieting co workers and sat down to eat the last of the spinach pie and I ate about half of it when I found this.

You can't see it in the picture very well, but it is a green beetle, chopped in half. You can see the antennae. It was funny, because as I was enjoying my lunch, I saw it and said to myself, "That piece of spinach sure looks like a bug." then I picked up with my fork and almost ate it. Now if you know me very well, you will know that this stuff doesn't affect me, but I couldn't finish the rest of it. oh well, Thanks dear, I thought I would bring this to your attention. And everyone else's...

Sleep? Do I get that?

So I forgot to mention that last night Vivian wakes up from her nap at 9:00pm when Stephanie and I are ready to go to bed. So Stephanie finishes up the Make it from Scratch post, I laid Vivian down in my bed and I read my book until she fell asleep in a few minutes. It was nice. They're cute when they're asleep. So when I was ready to go to sleep, I put her back in her crib, and went to sleep, until about 1:27. Thought it was time to get up and get ready to go to work. Then at 3:00, Vivian got up and when I entered her room , she exclaimed "HI!" I then picked her up and she said. "Mommy." So it was back to our bed. I then woke up at 3:30 and laid on the couch. At 4:30 I got up and browsed through some blogs. Why does Stephanie wake up when I am sitting on the computer? I was out of the bed for an hour and she didn't notice until I was up. She tells me to go back to bed, 4:30 is not the time to get up for work. Oh well. I put Viv back in her own bed, and then slept two more hours waking up hitting the alarm clock harder than I have ever have before. I don't know why. So today has been a chemically induced from caffeine and sweet-tarts. It snowed hard this morning. Stephanie Talks about the weekend here, be sure to check it out It was exciting. Phelan elaborates about NAIS again, and Kurt eludes to 1984 as well. If you have read 1984, I suggest you do. It freaks me out how many similarities there are. With that, have a nice day.

Snowy

I woke up this morning at it was warmer outside, 33 degrees to exact. When I went out to let the chickens out the snow dumped on us. AND a rabbit was out, so Stephanie and I went chasing after it. The roads were really bad getting to the office, now I am off to see the schools that did not call off. Yesterday I think we got 11 eggs. I'm hungry.

This post was brought to you by travelpro, you're online source for luggage and what ever else they are paying me to say here in this post.

does the busyness let up?

I think we have been busy since the last week of August of last year. This has been a reoccurring theme here, but oh well, that is what is happening. I think our ewe, (Maggie) is expecting. Here milk sac has dropped significantly. I am optimistic. Hopefully the goats are expecting as well. The chickens are up to 5-11 eggs a day (out of 14 hens), which is also good.

I created a facebook profile (because I can) so if you want to go there feel free.

Last night Stephanie did some mystery shopping for vacuum cleaners or something and I had the kids all to myself (much to the delight of Stephanie, you have no idea.) You would think that everything would go over pretty smooth, nothing out of the ordinary, right? No, not so much. She left me with Vivian hungry, Nolan with an early bed time, and Lydia n the couch sick. (And you wonder why I heard Stephanie was singing as she left the house...) After a fine dinner of leftovers, if you'll remember our microwave kicked the bucket a day or two ago, {which I am getting to like more every day} Kellen and I played some classic Nintendo 64 (Mario 64 {I have 52 Stars now} and Zelda Ocarina of Time has been our favorites lately.) I put Nolan to bed, and Lydia fell asleep on the couch. Meanwhile, Vivian is now running around the house in panties, {thanks to mamaw!} without any problems, so that is working out nicely. I get Lydia changed to go to bed, and put her down. While I am sitting Viv on the potty, I hear Lydia calling me from her bedroom saying she doesn't feel good, etc, etc, I comfort her, she seems to be ok, and go back to the youngest sitting on the porcelain god. While tending to her, I hear behind me, "daddy, I {cough, cough hack, hack, blah} and Lydia is standing at her bedroom door tossing her cookies right there. I command her to stay put and let her hack away. Viv has her pants on and I shoo her back to the living room, and continue to watch the vomit. At this point I think she is done, I tell her "ok let's go to the bathroom" ( which is 15 feet away) I pick her up to get her to the aforementioned porcelain god, just as I took a step she lets go again all over me, and her hair, and the carpet (the very thing I was trying to avoid by making her stay put leaving just one pile o' puke. Arby's, from lunch btw, just in case anyone was wondering :) So that was that, I cleaned her up, changed her, cleaned the bathroom and got Kellen to bed just in time for Stephanie to come home. I really wasn't frustrated, or mad at all. It is funny how the husband will do things when he has to, huh ladies? Stephanie smiled politely while I told my story, and I continued to play Mario until we went to bed at 11:00pm.

Sunglasses Walmart Boot Decisions

No Thursday Thirteen today. I have a decision to make and I need some advice. I need a new pair of sunglasses, and A new pair of work boots for around the farm. The choice is:1.) go with the cheap pair of sunglasses, and a nice pair hiking boots that are $39.97. OR 2.)the nice pair of Sunglasses that are $49.99 and the cheap boot at Wal-mart for $29.99. I have tried the boots on at Wal-mart, and they are not too bad. I question how long they will hold up with me. I go through boots pretty quick. I talked to the sales lady in the shoe dept, and she said I could take them back after a month if I am not satisfied. That's not bad, but I want my next pair of boots to last me like the previous pair I had. (I bought them in 2001 for some Alaska trip, any body remember that?) That pair cost about $120. But they lasted me until last October. I justify the sunglasses because I drive for work every day. I have had polarized sunglasses before and really like them . They help out a lot. It's like having heated seats in your car, once you have them it is hard to go back to the regular stuff. It's not much of a choice really money wise it is almost the same, but I tend to take too much time making the decision.

So what should I do?

A.Buy some cheap sunglasses and suck it up about driving a lot and buy the nice Boots with the zipper

B.Buy the nice sunglasses because it is nice having them because you drive so much and get the Wal-mart boots that might work out you can can always take them back after a month.

C. Stop dwelling on such a stupid decision, just buy what you want, you know you going to anyway.

D.Your wife is going to chime in soon, just be safe and do what she says...

We have two cats....

So we were sitting watching law and Order SVU last night, and I hear this scratching, something like my dog tapping the glass door wanting in. It was getting cold outside, but our dog rarely does that. So I go open the door to check, and no one is there. The scratching has stopped so I assume it is a mouse or something. After I sit down, the scratching starts again, Stephanie gives me the look that says "you better find out what that is, because I am not going to sleep knowing that something big is in our house."We narrow the sound down to a heat vent and I take it off to find one of our cats looking up at me. That's right there was a cat in our heating system, we have a heat pump that goes through what I call worm holes (nice Star trek reference) that connects to the heat vents. One of them came apart and the cat got into it and could not find its way out. So it was 11:00PM and I was crawling under the house in my crawlspace ( another note, why is it that the tallest person in the house has to crawl in the smallest place on the farm?) I took the vent apart that the cat was in, and left it alone until this morning where I crawled back underneath and fixed all three of the worm holes that were not attached to the vents.

I come out and the fence needed some attention as well. While working on the fence Kellen yells out "There are some rabbits out of the their hutch!" This morning just happens to be the first real snow of the season and guess what color my rabbits are? yes. You're right. they are all white. So I round them up as well, and get every one back to their homes and just have enough time to eat my four pieces of French toast with cream cheese, and syrup ( again why am I not 350 lbs?) and get to work 15 minutes late.

Kellen posted today and I laughed out loud. You have to know what he is like to get some of it, but it is funny in a 9 year old way. btw, isn't my wife good looking?

Rambling on

Yesterday was nice, we have a lot of people coming and going for the next few days. I am at work now (Black Friday is booming , I sold a piccolo, there was much rejoicing....yea) business ig getting better as the day passes. So yesterday I will make a long story short, I was out hunting and saw a what I know now as a button buck, 100 yards away and decided not to push it and not take a shot. I have been inconsistent with the .12 gauge I have lately, so I thought that 100 yards was a bit much. so one of the other guys out on the other side of me diagonally took him, and gave him to me, because he was being nice. he actually knew that I was out there and he said because he still had two in the freezer, that he would give it to me. I accepted, that's for sure, and cut him up this morning at daybreak.
While I was cutting up one this morning, Terry shot a nice ten point buck as well, and he and I drug him up out of the hollow. He looks good. I will get a picture up soon, (or Stephanie will.) All this before 9:00 am this morning. I hope to get out there again tonight if all the cutting is finished, but then I just realized that It will be dark when I leave the office tonight, duh.

So to brag on my wife a bit here, I am eating leftovers from yesterday, and I can go down the list of highlights from the menu:

  • Turkey- genetically engineered of course, that is a post of itself um, um, good. I am not opposed to the genetic engineering that is going on, everyone just remember not very turkey has that big breasts and legs normally.
  • Stuffing-Linda made this it is always great.
  • Ham- Linda also made a good sized honey spiral sliced ham, yum.
  • Sweet potatoes- I used to not really like these but after I was forced into it and tried them they are good. She doesn't make the marshmallow kid that would be disgusting. Stephanie made them this time with a pecan crust on top. It is almost like a pecan pie. It was delicious.
  • Rolls- She made these rolls from scratch. Again, why am I not 350 lbs? She made white and whole wheat. I enjoyed both. The white had a nice flavor, but the wheat made for a hearty addition to your gravy.
  • Cornbread salad- Linda again, this is something I had never hear of before, and 5 years ago , I would not have tried it, but I took my thank you serving and it was not bad at all. Really.
  • Spinach pie- This was from Aunt Brenda, a nice addition to the table as well.
  • Mashed Potatoes-from scratch by Linda again, they was good.

  • Cranberry sauce I did not partake of this homemade side dish. sorry Steph.

I'm sure that were more things, but I can't remember them all right now.
I don't think there was a thing served on that table that tasted bad. How do you incorporate horse riding apparel into a post that will ultimately have nothing to do with horses or anything like that? I could mention that my brother used to work for a Weaver Leather and I saw their advertisement in some horse riding magazine one day, but he doesn't work for them any more so there would be not point. huh? Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Should I even mention what was served for dessert? ok, you twisted my arm...There was:

Pecan pie
Pumpkin pie
Cheesecake
Pumpkin cake
Date pudding

I think that was it, but I think I forgot something, the fact is I am the most spoiled person on the planet. I am really surprised that I am not going on the TV show The Biggest Loser. Oh and another thought. It is snowing finally, and the weather is perfect for hunting. and the start of the Christmas Season (notice I didn't say holiday.) I can officially enjoy some of the Christmas Music that is being played and try not to get sick of it by December 10th. I hope everyone had a enjoyable Thanksgiving as I did.

Rest up this weekend and get a lot of exercise, I hear that the average American will gain 8 lbs over the Christmas Season. I hope I can come out below ten.... moo

Wedding Singer

I listen to xm radio. We live out in the boonies, and I am on the road a lot, So I can justify it pretty quickly. They really have everything you want to listen to and more. (They started the christmas music November 1st for crying out loud.) I can flip through the channels and find anything genre and band you can think of. So I was flipping through one day, and came across Van Halen's "hot for teacher", and every time I hear Van Halen, I can only think if the Wedding Singer movie where Adam Sandler says "Get my Van Halen t-shirt off, you make them break up!" Anyway I did see that they had a Van Halen tour coming up. I'm sorry but 20 years from now, I don't think I will want to go see the Smashing Pumpkins reunion tour, or the Foo Fighters when they are 60 years old. I might pay to go watch Harry Connick Jr when he is 60, he will still be hot.
